Hillcrest Elementary School San Francisco, California
San Francisco Unified School District
K2A provided architectural and engineering services for the modernization and new construction for Hillcrest Elementary School, which involved a phased modernization of the existing campus, interim housing, and a new classroom building. The project totaled $12.5 million.
Completed in phases, the first phase included modernization and interim housing. The scope of work consisted of school modernization and reconstruction including ADA access, seismic upgrades, and fire/life/safety upgrades, as well as restroom upgrades, new mechanical and plumbing and electrical systems, and new paint and finishes. Interim housing was a modular building with six classrooms, student and staff restrooms and associated utility rooms. The new 6,500 SF classroom building includes six general education classrooms, student and staff restrooms and MEP equipment rooms. The scope also includes sitework such as concrete paving, asphalt paving, bioretention planters, and replacement of existing playground matting.
K2A, known to the District for quality documentation and successful DSA approvals, was handed the project when the previous architect was not performing. As a result, our team was not a part of the programming or stakeholder engagement efforts, which for a renovation also includes a comprehensive facility assessment. The team had to play catch-up, discovering and solving issues as the work was being completed on the drawings. Close communication with DSA helped to shepherd the project through approvals.
