Menlo School Maker Lab and Dance Studio Menlo Park, CA
K2A created a new maker’s space out of an underused basement space to expand the existing space in support of the Applied Science and Engineering program.
The space features a dedicated “soft-tool” room for such tools as the laser cutter, 3-D printer, screwdriver etc. that is separate from the “hard-tool” room where the table saw, drill press, etc. live, so that when there is no teacher to supervise the hard-tool shop, they can lock it up and leave the soft-tool area open for students to access. In addition, there are office spaces for teachers, classroom, and a large conference room that can seat up to 20 people.
Another exciting addition is a 20-foot-long and one foot deep water trough, designed to a steady water flow and six to eight inches of water depth for testing the engineering products the students build and support curriculum for such classes as Sustainable Engineering. Additional water features include restrooms, water fountain, and bottle-filling station.
K2A renovated the former orchestra room into a dance studio, doubling their existing dance space and providing more effective space for classes and rehearsals. The space features a wood floor specific for dance, ballet bar, and sound system.
