Outdoor Classroom and Sports Fields, Ortega Elementary School Pacifica School District

K2A provided planning and architectural design services to reconfigure the elementary campus outdoor area. Verde Design was our partner in developing a concept design for an outdoor classroom, as well as new athletic fields.
Outdoor Learning
The outdoor learning area reclaims an underused courtyard between classroom buildings. The existing 30% slope between the classroom courtyard provides not only challenges from an accessibility standpoint for students with disabilities, but also a unique opportunity to incorporate a play element at the south corner. A ramp provided equal access to an outdoor learning area with bench seating. The 3’ tall retaining wall between the classroom building and the proposed outdoor classroom space provides a perfect spot for school art projects.
Sports Fields
New sports fields include baseball and soccer featuring artificial turf to support not only the students’ physical education and play but also to be used by the community.
